Jens Bouttery (°1988, Oostduinkerke, Belgium) is a drummer, composer & producer active in a wide range of artistic disciplines, based in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. During his education as a jazzdrummer at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels, his musical base got rooted in the Free Jazz scene of Brussels. These roots have now expanded to film, theatre & dance work internationally. The drumset is his home base but he became a multi-instrumentalist throughout the years, curious for other input, unpolished mastery or even DIY-builds for instruments. His artistic universe converges around exploring freedom within compositional performance structures. All musical styles are a possible influence as long as they have a natural connection to the core of the work and as long as they create a unique organic world that suits the project. He created multi-disciplinary performances with his band Jens Maurits Orchestra that utilize philosophical and scientific input of evolutionary processes for the compositions. This resulted in the award-winning performance The Dubtapes, Triggers and Thresholds and The Blogpera. Another branch of Jens’ work cultivates explorations with language. Throughout his work the underlying musical structures of language are an inspiration and sometimes become literal input for his music. He transcribed multiple speeches, interviews or even bird songs to be played live on the drums and other instruments. The performance TAL with theatre collective BOG dug into the evolution of (Dutch) language and the choir sung poly-rythmical language compositions by Jens with custom musical notation systems. He’s currently working with theatre groups Wunderbaum, Urland & Naomi Velissariou, film directors Anthony Schatteman & Steye Hallema and bands Hi Hawaii, Thunderblender & Meral Polat Trio. Together with guitarist/composer Benjamin Sauzereau, he co-founded the Brussels based label “~suite”.
